Kindle Touch vs Nook Simple Touch Reader- The Best In E Ink Go Head To Head. And The Winner Is?
With all the new versions of ebook readers on the market, it’s tough to keep up! As far as E Ink ebook readers go, there are a couple new hot ones on the market worth comparing. Of course, that means looking at the Kindle Touch vs Nook Simple Touch. And the winner is?
Barnes and Noble released the Simple Touch Reader in May of 2011, and it was received well with customers. Here’s a quick overview of some features.
- 1,000 books memory
- Programmable page turn buttons
- SD Card memory expansion slot
- WiFi
- Matte-black rubber coating
- EPUB file compatible
- 2 Month battery life on one charge
- 6″ E Ink touch screen
Amazon has countered with their own touch E Ink reader, the Kindle Touch. This has some similar features, but differs by quite a lot as well. Here’s a quick feature overview.
- 3,000 books memory
- No page buttons on sides anymore
- Amazon EC2 Cloud backup and overflow storage
- WiFi and 3G Wifi models available
- Matte gray finish
- Kindle books available at libraries as its own file type
- 2 Month battery life on one charge
Take a close look at those two lists and you’ll notice some big differences. Amazon has done away with the page turn buttons on the side, relying solely on the touch screen for navigation. Noticeably the Kindle Touch comes standard with 3,000 books memory, with free overflow capacity and backup on the Amazon EC2 Cloud. The Nook Simple Touch Reader comes with 1,000 books and one needs to purchase an SD card for larger storage capacity. Price Factor- One thing absent on that list is the pricing of the two devices. The Kindle Touch’s WiFi Only is priced at $40 less than the Nook Simple Touch, which only offers a WiFi version. The 3G+WiFi version is $10 more than the Nook Simple Touch. This may be a factor in product popularity this holiday season and beyond. Library Books- No Longer An Arguing Point? In the past, Nook users would scoff at Kindle users, pointing out they couldn’t read library books on their devices! Amazon has obviously been listening to disgruntled customers and working behind the scenes with libraries. They haven’t allowed the use of the EPUB, but instead have allowed for libraries to carry a certain amount of “for Kindle” titles that can be checked out. These two E Ink touch ebook readers have some very similar features, but it’s obvious there are some big differences as well. It comes down to consumer preference in the end when comparing the Kindle Touch vs Nook Simple Touch Reader.

nook (simple touch) vs (upcoming) kindle touch?
want a touch screen ereader but between these two which one is better? i’m so confused!!! thanks in advance for all your input!
i already have a itouch so an ipad or nook color is not for me. i tried the kindle on my itouch and the screen is very straining oon my eyes that is why i am looking between the simple touch nook and kindle touch.
Hi, baileysmommy622, Nook (unlike Kindle) supports eBooks in ePub format that is the universal format most used in the world. Current e-Ink Nook Simpletouch has the latest generation touch screen display, no page turn lag, it weights less, its battery lasts twice as long (two months on one charge), and it doesn’t blink on each page turn – much better than current Kindle 3. Nook Touch is still better designed than even the new Kindle Touch with battery lasting two months with ONE hour reading a day with Wi-Fi off thus it’s still twice as long as new Kindle’s two months with HALF and hour a day with Wi-Fi off. It looks like Kindle didn’t get any battery improvement in the new model, they only changed the test condition. More, Kindle Touch still flashes black on each page turn while Nook Touch reduces the flashing by 80%. Nook Touch and Nook Color (unlike Kindle) have microSD card slot to take a card (class 6 or above) up to 32 GB. On Nook, you can make it boot from a “rooted” microSD card and if you want to get back to the original Nook you can just take out the card and reboot. Kindles are made to be almost like a “dumb terminal” of the past to make sure you’re tied up to Amazon’s storage on the web (for which you need Wi-Fi connection to get to.) If you walk in with the Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you’re allowed to read ANY available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi.
Sony EReader Review
Sony, the electronic devices monster, was a leader in the ongoing wave of electronic ebook readers, introducing its initial Sony eReader model back in 2006. Nonetheless, Amazon has moved up in the rankings. The Amazon Kindle ebook reader, created in 2007, has been acknowledged as the industry leader…yet are things shifting?. Now, Sony is introducing brand new products in order to keep up with the competition.
WSJ’s Personal Technology columnist W. Mossberg, analyzes the Sony’s wireless. His Sony ereader review claims this ereader puts Sony back in the e-reader game.
In contrast to the Kindle, Sony’s readers weren’t wireless and you weren’t able to download books or newspapers directly to the device, rather than via a laptop or computer. Finally, that problem has been solved with the new Sony’s ereader Daily Edition.
The new sony ereader is not a mere clone of the Kindle. It has a distinctive design and style viewpoint and is stronger in several areas, weaker in others. Generally, I liked using it, once I perfected its user interface, which took quite a few hours. I especially appreciated the fact that it provides a larger display into a comfortably small product, and largely makes use of touch navigation in lieu of all physical controls. For instance, while the Sony does have a small page switching button, you can more easily flip pages simply by swiping your finger over the screen. It is also much better at navigating electronic digital newspapers, something I have never found very satisfying with the Kindle.
On the downside, the Daily Edition seems to have 3 main flaws when compared to the Kindle. First, it is a bit more expensive. Next, it has fewer choices of copywrite ebooks, but this should be a temporary situation. Third, the technology that makes the display touch sensitive also dims it a bit, so the Daily Edition’s screen is darker than the Kindle’s. Most consider the Sony display screen decent, however it is more challenging to read in lower light.
The eReader Daily Edition is a slim product with a black metal body that contrasts sharply with the larger, white plastic-type body of the Kindle. Despite the fact that both products use equivalent basic display screen technology, and the same screen width, the Sony eReader Daily Edition’s has a longer screen; it is 7 inches versus 6 inches for the Amazon Kindle. In my tests, I found this a significant advantage, because whenever both products were set for comparable text sizes, the new Sony ereader held much more text on the page, cutting down on the need for page turns, which interrupts reading.
Furthermore, the eReader Daily Edition is more narrow than the Amazon Kindle, because the borders around the display screen are thinner, because they do not have to allow for the Kindle’s many large buttons or actual key-board. You can easily type in text for notes or searches on the Daily Edition by means of a stylus pen for handwriting or even a virtual onscreen keyboard. This lengthier, narrower design gives the new Sony eReader a good feel in the hand.
Additionally I preferred the Sony’s process for presenting newspapers, which allows more headlines to be viewed at once and required a fewer amount of steps in order to find the way through the newspaper.
The new Sony eReader also promises additional battery life with wireless powered down. It comes equipped with a cover, which is an added expense on the Kindle, and can interact with more book platforms, among them is the no cost digital ebooks supplied by your public library. Built-in memory space is identical, although the Daily Edition’s can be expanded while the Kindle’s isn’t able to.
Like the Amazon Kindle, the Sony eReader Daily Edition also permits you to drag songs, pictures and some personal documents onto the device via your pc. I did this with no issues.
The eReader Daily Edition offers companion software for purchasing, reading and storing books on both Personal computers and Macs.
Also, I determined the eReader Daily Edition required a more difficult learning process compared to the Kindle. First, it takes awhile to get used to the touch display screen, mostly because they need much more pressure than on, say, an iPhone. Secondly, using touch to bring up attributes and menus can be a mystery until you read the manual. For instance, it took a little while to realize that you can set a bookmark by double tapping on the upper right corner.
All in all, despite its higher price tag, the eReader Daily Edition is a big leap for Sony and adds an additional good option for shoppers.
